New discoveries – rare tree

Nov 11 005

Barry Embling, Site Manager at Cefn Ila spotted a conspicuous yellow tree in the arboretum that he’d not ever seen before. Further investigation revealed it to be the rare Bitternut from North America, a very rare tree indeed, and one of very few in South Wales. The Bitternut is a type of hickory, well known to woodsmen as it’s the preferred timber used for making axe handles.
